Magazine decor balls part 1

Today I decided to make some decorative balls using some old magazines that I had laying around. I made two different kinds, but I'll save the second one for another day.

I started by cutting strips of magazine about an inch wide.

Then, I folded the strips in on each side, making the strip about a half an inch wide. It's important to fold both ends in, and not just fold the strip in half, this will prevent the strips from opening later on.

After the strips were prepared, I just started winding and gluing the strips onto my styrofoam ball. Be careful! The glue is really hot, and will not only burn your fingers, but melt the ball as well.

When I had a good start on one side, I started again on the opposite side, so that both ends would have the coils.

Don't panic if your magazine ball ends up looking like a gluey mess. Mine sure did. Just wait for the glue to dry completely before trying to get it off, or you really WILL end up with a gluey mess (on your fingers and on the ball).

That's it! So easy, but pretty time consuming.

edit: I wanted to make more of these, but when I went to the craft store to get more styrofoam balls, they were $4.99 for a pack of two. WHAT? I bought my first pack for 99 cents. Um, yeah. I couldn't bring myself to buy them. So, instead I used little styrofoam oranges. They worked out perfectly!

  1. DOnt forget to always check out the DOLLAR STORE! (It has to be a good $1 Store though) I'd suggest the DOLLAR TREE.

  2. Hmmm...you did a great job, but I know I'd need more than 2 hands and the ones I do have would have glue burns. I'm nursing the glue burns from the paper flowers I made yesterday. LOL!
    They are darn cute!!!

  4. Everytime I pull your site up my hubby (who sits behind the desk on my couch with his laptop) cracks up. :)

I got some styrofoam balls to make snowpeople than unfortunately didn't materialize. Now I know what I'll be making with them.

Thanks for hooking up to Mi4M!

  8. Love the idea! I, too, don't understand why styrofoam is so outrageously expensive!

  9. Ugh! I hear you on the cost of those styrofoam balls! I even looked at my Dollar Tree and they only had itty bitty ones. Sadness.
