Tree Question

While watching America's Funniest Home Videos yesterday, it dawned upon me that some people don't decorate the back of their trees.
It seemed like a great idea. So, I wanted to try it out tonight when I decorated my tree.

I just couldn't do it, though. The perfectionist in me just couldn't leave the back of the tree bare, even if no one would be able to see it.

So! Now I want to know if you decorate the back of your tree. Why or why not?

Also, sorry for the lack of crafts up here. I have a few in process, they're just not finished yet because finals are coming up (ugh). I can't wait for Christmas break!

  1. Hey, I feel ya. We are in our final week before finals. I have a test, 2 homework assignments, and one paper due tomorrow alone. Anyway, yes, I decorate the back of my tree...
however, my mom didn't decorate the back of hers once...and it was 12 feet tall (we had high ceilings). Guess what? It fell. At 2 am. Most of her keepsake hallmark ornaments broke! So DON'T do it! Just a note from the wise. haha.
Come visit if you have a chance! Love your blog!

  2. that is SO weird. i had never EVER thought or even heard of not decorating the back of your tree! I spend so much time choosing a tree that has no holes and is full all the way around that i figure i better use it all! I guess the people that don't decorate the back of their tree are the same people that put the hole in the branches towards the wall? And Sierra has a great point!! Its lopsided & dangerous.. not to mention incomplete! im too much of a perfectionist and like things nice and even and symmetrical that it would probably kill me dead to not decorate a section of it. Anyway love your blog!!

  3. I decorate all around my try because it sits in the front window. I don't put as many of the ornaments on that side though! Sneaky, I know, but no one has ever said anything!
    Happy Decorating!

  4. Yes, our tree is decorated all the way around. It would be really strange not do because it is not flat against the roll, and you would still be able to SEE that it is not decorated in the back. Besides, that sounds like a sit-com meal where all the actors sit on three sides of a table and leave the fourth side 'empty' so there is a good camera angle. lol

  5. The kids decorate our tree (and I rearrange while they are at school). Some ornaments make it to the back, but mostly it's bare. We stick it in a corner, though, and it's almost 8 feet tall, so the kids have a hard time getting back there.

  6. Our tree backs up to the window but I have a sheer curtain over the window and the tree is on the second story.

I put the ornaments I don't like on the back of the tree. I don't leave a single ornament in the box, even the one that looks like a snowman that wants to eat your soul.

  7. I'm usually pretty particular about things too, but I don't decorate the back of my tree.

I never found it unusual until I saw this post and all of the comments with you complete tree decorators ;)

hhaha now I feel like a decorating slacker!

No, my tree sits in a corner of my living room, and to be completely honest I never even thought of putting decorations in the corner that we don't see.

  8. I decorate all around my tree, only because it's in front of the window (and I too keep the not-so-nice decorations facing the window!) Growing up, the tree was always in a corner, so it never got decorated all around - and you couldn't tell at all. Real trees were also tied to the wall so they wouldn't fall over!

  9. When we decorate our tree we put the uglier decorations at the back of the tree and the pretty ones at the front..

So.. yes we decorate the back.. but not as nicely as the front.

    :)

  10. I do decorate the back of the tree, but it's not right up against a wall, so you can see it from certain angles. I would be afraid of it falling over, like some other commenters have said actually happened.

  11. Because our two trees are in front of windows I did put ornaments on the back. Two years ago while living in the UK, our house was tiny with room for a tree. I tried not putting the majority of the limbs on one side and wedging (literally) it between our TV and fireplace. All the decor went on the front and whatever limbs were on the back. An hour later the tree fell down. =( I packed it up and threw the tree out; it didn't fit our house. The next year we bought a smaller tree that fit the house better. Now that we are living stateside our house is big enough that we have two trees up. Next year we are hoping to get a tree taller then 4'. If I had it to do all over again in the UK I would put a couple hooks on the wall (command strip maybe) and tied the half tree (back limbs off) to them. Half trees are great in small houses.

  12. I decorate the back of my tree a little bit. Most of our ornaments go in the front, but I save a few for the back.

  14. I could never NOT decorate the back. It has to be perfect all the way around. I even have a friend that looks at the backs of people's trees just to see, so I can't say "Well no one will see it" 'cause at least she will.

  15. We decorate the front and back - we can't leave any ornaments in the box!! And if we only did the front, we would not be able to see our tree. It would be buried. I would actually like to get a second tree, for our basement, for the kids. I think they have more ornaments than we do now (and they are only 4 and 6!!) That one, I'm sure, could be fake. (don't tell my hubby, he loves his real trees so!)

  16. I absolutely decorate my entire tree. I'm very picky when it comes to Christmas time and make sure to evenly spread all my ornaments out. Every ornament I have is used but just in proportions.

  17. Nope, only the top half... front and back though, it's against a window :) A two year old with busy hands...

  18. I TOTALLY deorate the backside of my tree- and for several reasons.
    1. What if my tree falls over?(like it did the night I put it up)ALL my ornaments would break- at least the ones on the back have a fighting chance!
    2. I am slightly OCD and just can't imagine not having the whole thing done.
    3. My 'personal' backside gets covered and sometimes decorated with cute little designs on my jeans pocket and such- why shouldn't my Christmas tree?!?!? :)

  19. This is the first year I haven't just because I couldn't reach:). But i'm totally with you on the perfectionism.

  20. well now that you asked,, i did a rather odd thing this year,, i had a bigger tree than normal and the same size(small) living room as always,, so when putting the tree together i left off the back branches altogether, anchored it to the wall with some twine, just in case it wanted to tip over and pushed it to the wall,, and it to us it looks just as good. But of course by the time my kitty cat is finished with it who knows what it'll look like.

  21. It never even occurred to me to decorate the back of the tree. It sits in a corner and no one can see the back. I LOVE my ornaments and want to be able to see them all. Plus, we have a MEGA amazing tree stand so there's no danger of it ever falling over.

  22. i always decorate the back of the tree...until last year, that is. we got a bigger tree and didn't have enough ornaments to fill it up. i wanted to buy more, but my husband said we should just not decorate the back...and save money in the process. so this year, he and my 3 yr old son decorated the tree while i cleaned up. and when i looked at the tree...no decorations on the back! so i guess now i don't decorate the back!

  26. When we have our tree in a corner, we sparsely decorate the back. I am also such a perfectionist, that I have to cover the whole tree!
