A few days ago, my mom made some awesome laundry detergent and posted about it on her blog. I was so jealous, that I just HAD to make some, too. So that was our fun Sunday activity.
We used an awesome recipe that we found on Rainy Day Farm. (sidenote: Rainy Day Farm is a great blog. I've been reading it for a while, and have fallen in love. Then, my mom let me know that she used to be my neighbor. Crazy! I have so many great memories of her, so that just makes me love her blog that much more) It's a great recipe and smells delicious. I'll post it here for convenience, but be sure to check her blog out, okay?
Laundry Soap Recipe
3 bars Pink Zote Soap
4 pound box of Borax
4 pound box of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda
4 pound box of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
1 small bucket of Oxygen Cleaner (like Oxyclean)
**Grate Zote Soap and mix it with all the dry ingredients in large bowl (or garbage bag)
Use a small scoop and add it in with your laundry to replace store bought detergent.
Of course, I couldn't just use a plain ol' glass jar to hold my detergent. Nope. I had to add a little something.
I couldn't find my hot glue gun, so I used some Mod Podge to adhere it to the jar. It worked really well.
Ok, I would love to try this. I always add oxyclean to my laundry now and I love borax too! Does this work in HE washing machines? I'm sure it would huh? Just a smaller amount?
ReplyDeleteI make our own laundry detergent too (it's liquid)! It doesn't look as pretty as this does, but it works great. Ours is just stored in an old commercial laundry detergent jug, though, so nowhere near as pretty as yours. =)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great, so how does it work? I bet it's a money saver. Maybe I'll give it a try. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteooo i love that you made your own detergent. mine keeps getting stolen. maybe i should make some for myself.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and thanks for the kuddos. I think I got three new followers because of you! I love what you did to the jar. Looks so chic.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, and everyone I know is jelous that I used to babysit you when we lived in Utah! I still run upon that cute picture of you and Ryker and I remember you reading me Green Eggs and Ham when you were in Kindergarted! I sure have missed you guys over the years. I am so glad we have blog land to get reacquainted!
Can I at least spell/type! Kindergarten! What a dork!
ReplyDeleteI made laundry soap yesterday but it isn't pretty like yours and in such a nice container. I'm going to try your recipe rather than the basic I have. Thanks for sharing and your Mom too.one
ReplyDeleteI love homemade laundry soap...I make cold process soap from scratch, so I can use my own to grate up and scent however I choose. I'm a total geek.
ReplyDeleteHere's a tip...if you have hard water, after a while your clothes (especially whites) will start to look dingy with handmade soap. To help slow that process, use a downey ball filled to the top with white vinegar thrown in with the clothes at the beginning of the cycle. It works to rebalance the pH levels and gets rid of extra soap residue.
We have very hard water, so I resort to using Tide every now and then for a couple washings, then go back to my homemade.
peace.
What is Zote soap?? I have never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteJust curious, how much did it cost you to make and how long will it last? (How many loads?)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great recipe.I am going to try this & see how my hubby is with it.He is allergic to perfume so this would be perfect. Thanks for the recipe.
ReplyDeleteLizzie.x
Does it have a good smell to it? cuz i luv a good smelling shirt fresh from the laundry...that I need, so does it?
ReplyDeleteHi there. I found the Zote at Big lots, but I can't find the A & H Washing soda anywhere. Where do you buy it?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
How much does this make?
ReplyDeleteI switched to homemade laundry detergent about 6 months ago, I am still using the first batch I made. I will never buy a brand name again. This works so much better! I grabbed clothing that had stains that I could never remove and it removed every single one. I add a scent booster into the mix too. I have also started using homemade fabric softner and the clothes come out of the dryer wrinkle and static free.
