Remember how we all love Google Reader?

Well, be prepared to love it just a little more.

Last time I wrote about Google Reader, I got some awesome (and very helpful, may I add) comments about how to make Google Reader that much more great. So, I thought I would share with you an awesome tip that Angela from Craving Cupcakes and Michelle from So Wonderful, So Marvelous shared with me.

This tip will make your blog reading so much more enjoyable. It's called "adding the next button to your toolbar so you can read all your Google Reader blogs, but actually get to see their cute layouts, too" It's a mouthful, right? Okay, actually, I really don't know what it's called. BUT, that name would be very fitting (think about it, Google).

The first step is simple. Just go to your Google Reader home page. Find where it says "Settings" and choose "Reader Settings" from the drop bar.

On the settings page, find where it says "Goodies" and click on that.

Scroll down until you see this:

Follow those simple instructions (drag that next image to your bookmark bar), and your "next" button will be ready to use.

See it up there? Now, all you have to do is click it once and it will take you to your first unread item in your Google Reader.

Click it again and it'll take you to the next new post in line.

Isn't that fantastic? Now, your favorite blogs will still be getting the page hits that they so desperately deserve, AND you'll be more likely to comment since you'll be seeing the actual sites. I'm lovin' this feature so far.

You should be seeing a few changes over here on Oops! as far as posting goes. I'm going to try for at least one craft a week (I know, lame. This is a craft blog) and two additional posts as well. Perhaps I'll try out of reader tutorials? We'll see. All I know is that I need to be a better blogger, and limiting this blog to simply a craft blog just isn't cuttin' it.

  6. I love the idea of this- being able to actually visit all the blogs to read them is great! But I use some of the features in Google Reader quite often- like the "keep unread" button on the bottom when I come across a lengthy post that I want to read more on, but don't have enough time at the moment. And the "share" "like" & "star" buttons are frequently used too. If there was a way to still be able to use them when I did this I'd be won over for sure b/c I really like this new way of browsing through my reader.

  7. this is great! I love this. I always find it irritating when I'm running short on time (which is always), to open up blogs to read their whole post, or to comment, now I'll be able to comment more! yay!

  8. I think I love you! Thanks so much for this information.

  9. for some reason your posts havent been popping into my reader... weird. So I have a question about this next thing, can I still star and tag posts I like? If so please tell computer-illiterate me how to do that.

  13. You have changed my Google Reader Life. See, I'm commenting more! And, I've already noticed stuff in peoples' sidebars that I never saw before.

    Fabulous!

  14. To take this hint one step further, I follow blogs of all different types. Mainly papercrafting, sewing and food. I use the feature that lets you put them in different categories in google reader, and then I can make a 'next' button for each catergory. That way if I'm only in the mood to surf papercrafting blogs, I use that next button. And so on.

  36. Thanks for sharing this! I've not used Google Reader for many reasons including not seeing the full layout (which is often great eye candy!) and wanting blogs I love to get their hits....so this works out great! :>

    ReplyDelete
  37. Ok. Now this ROCKS!! We definitely should spread the word. AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Now that is awesome! Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh snap, how awesome is this! I hope it works with Google Chrome as well! I'm thinking it probably will since it looks like you use FireFox and typically what works for one, works for the other.

    ReplyDelete
  40. For whatever reason, I can't get this to work for me and I'm feeling like a dork! Anyone else have any trouble?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Kelly (and who ever else can't get this trick to work)

Is your toolbar for bookmarks showing? I've gotten a few emails about this, and that seems to be the common problem for all of them.

Here's a snippet of an email I sent someone yesterday about it.

"I actually use Firefox, and it works perfectly for me. That's really weird it's not working for you.
    hmmm.

What if you go up to "View" (at the very top), then "Toolbars".... Does where it says "bookmarks toolbar" have a check by it? if not, select that!

Once it's selected, THEN go and drag the next button up there and it should work.

Let me know if you get it all figured out or if you need a little more help!"

Good luck. Please keep me updated on whether or not you can get it to work!

  42. I did finally get it to work, had to tweak my settings so that my favorites bar had it's own line up there. Does that make sense? LOL
Anyway, I have the Next button although it has the google sign next to it instead of being orange. I don't care though because it works and I'm loving the new feature. Thanks for your help!

  43. This is great … I'm so lazy about visiting the blogs themselves to make comments! What cracks me up is when I click on it and I have no more unread items I get this:

Congratulations, you've reached the end of this internet. Look for another?

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thank you so much! I used it this morning and it is wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  45. wow! I did this, and cruised through 20 items very quickly! I find it annoying to jump out of my reader to comment, this makes commenting so much easier!
thanks for sharing this info. I will be linking to your post in the near future.

  46. Love this tip! I'm blogging about it tomorrow and sending my readers to you. Well, I don't have a lot of readers, but hey, my 1 or 2 may help you out. :)
    Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. oh my gosh this is INCREDIBLE!!
is it ok if I copy and paste a little of this on my site (still giving you credit though)?

    ReplyDelete
  48. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! In a completely embarrassed way, I'm admitting to just having jumped on the Google reader wagon about 2 months ago. But i was hating missing some entries, and definitely becoming a lazy commenter. I barely left any because it required too many extra clicks. (yep. I'm that lazy!)

this solves all my problems. Back to being a devoted reader, follower, and commenter on all my favorite blogs!! Thank you!

    (did I say thank you?)

  49. Thank you! I've been using Google Reader for ages, but I never knew about this feature, and I always felt bad about not giving my blog buddies the page hits they deserve!

Also, since I just commented on about seventy-five of your posts, I thought I would let you know that I'm not some crazed stalker, but I found a few of your projects at Jen's Weekend Roundup Party and got hooked, so I subscribed and I've been "catching up". :)

  50. I love Google Reader, been using it for years. It has always bugged me that some blogs come in with only a snippet of info (even my own mom's!!!) but I never knew how to fix that! If it was an important enough blog, I would just go to the site for that one and REader just served as an alert system for me. Thanks so much for this info! I have a Mac and I could not get the Next button to work with Safari, but it seems to be fine so far on Firefox. Now to move everything else over and see how that goes...... ;)

  51. Thanks for posting this tip. I've been missing the layouts/features of the blogs I read ever since I switched to google reader-not anymore (=
