I was shocked when my mom and my friend LeDawn (check her out, she's awesome) told me they didn't know what the heck Google Reader even was. WHAT!? So, then I did a little poll amongst my friends and found out that lots of people have no clue what I'm talking about when I say stuff like "So then I checked my Google Reader..." My mind was boggled people. Bog-gled.
Now I feel like it's my duty to let you, my loyal friends and readers, in on the greatest thing known to (wo)man.
So, fasten your seat belts and let's get going.
First, what IS Google Reader, anyway? Google Reader is the easiest way to read blogs, without having to remember pesky URLs. You just simply input the URL once (yes! Only ONCE!) and it'll show you every single update on that blog. Swoon.
So, how do you get Google Reader? Simple! Just go to www.google.com/reader. You'll need a Google account to continue, but seriously don't sweat it. It literally takes two minutes to set up. Once you have an account, you can log in.
When you log in, the page will look like this:
Completely empty.
Now's the fun part. Click on add a subscription to well...Add a subscription (the blog URL).
After you add your subscription, it should look like this:
Keep on adding subscriptions until your heart feels content. Here's my real Google Reader (the one above was just for example). This is what it looks like when I first log in.
Oh look! 26 posts were made (by different bloggers) since last time I logged in. If you want to see ALL of those, instead of just the most recent on the home page, you click on all items.
It looks like Mer in Cashmere updated a ton, but she just moved to a new blog and imported all her old stuff... No worries! Definitely go check her out, though. She's awesome.
So awesome, in fact, that I'm going to use part of her post to show you how awesome it is to click a post title!
Look how great that post looks. No ads, no annoying background, no music...Just clean and beautiful (though, her site is always clean, but you get the picture).
Ready to move to the next post? Awesome, just scroll down and click on the next title.
So, there you have it. A mini how to on using Google Reader.
I must warn you, though...Google Reader IS addicting and you probably WILL double (or triple) your blog reading time because it's so addicting to add new blogs, and so easy to remember those blogs you always seem to forget to write down (and kick yourself later for)
I must also warn you that sometimes there is heartache regarding Google Reader. Like, when this message pops up.
It's the worst.
What are you opinions of Google Reader? Love it? Hate it? Use it? Had no idea what it was? Let me know!
** These are my real, true opinions. I wasn't asked to write this post.
Edit: I will never use the word "awesome' again. Sorry about that, I got a little excited.

That's funny, because I just read your post about Google Reader, in Google Reader! I love it. I recently started using it, and I love how to don't have to go to each individual blog to see if anyone has updated, it's all right there. I even love how Google Reader automatically adds blogs that I start to follow through Blogger.com! SOOOO CONVENIENT! Thank you Google for always being on step ahead of the things I need, before I even realize I need it!
I L-O-V-E my google reader. I have it as one of the boxes on my iGoogle so I have all of my blogs to read on my google start up page. Its so convenient and I dont have to miss a beat. I can even star it there to go back later. Love it!
Wow. MY mind is boggled! I didn't know google reader even existed. Checking it out right now!
I COMPLETELY agree... what do people do without reader? Just click around and hope someone has updated? That is SUCH a waste of time!
wow, it's that easy, how stupid do I feel now. But hey, I never claimed to know how to use a computer well.
I will for sure be more addcited to blog stalking now!
Thanks for doing this! I feel so special! I always feel like my questions are stupid so this makes me feel better to know I am not alone.
I luurrrrve my g-reader!
You must look into igoogle; you can see reader updates as soon as you go online! How do people live without this? Oh, wait, they probly get a lot more done with their time . . .
I've known about Google Reader, but never bothered to use it. But I guess it seems like I need to!
I couldn't live without Google Reader. Love it!
I cudnt live without it either! I have it on my iPhone too... I need to stop following so many blogs.. I usually have 149 items to read at least!
I love using Google reader, but I've recently had to trim down my subscriptions because if I missed a day, I'd come back to around 500 unread items! I love that I can star items, categorize them, and refer to them later. For example, when I see a cute idea for one of my kids' next birthday parties, I star it and add the tag "party." When it's planning time, I look at my party items, and Google has saved them there for me. I don't have to make folders in my computer!
An even easier way to subscribe if you're visiting the site, just click the blue rss button at the top of the address bar and it will help you subscribe. (I think the first time you use it, you have to tell it which reader you want to use.)
Also, you can create folders in your reader so if you read a whole bunch of different kinds of blogs you can keep them organized. For example, I have book blog, crafty blogs, friends blogs and photography blogs (to name a few) all organized into neat little folders.
thank you for linking to me i love ou!
ditto what lk said...I got so carried away that I was not even getting through posts fast enough and i had to choose my faves. the portability and convenience is awesome:)
I've heard of Google Reader, but I wasn't sure if it was something I needed, but maybe I do. Do you know if reading a blog through Google Reader counts on Analytics? Just wondering.
I haven't been using, I knew it was there but haven't used it because I kind of like seeing everyones actual blogs but I guess I will have to give it a try.
I loved learning about goggle reader! I started reading blogs like crazy on my iTouch while nursing. I love that I can search all my blogs simultaneously when I remember an idea but not the blog I read it on. I do need to tag more often, that sounds like a good idea. I don't like that I have to scroll all the way back to the top (on the iTouch) of the post to click on the title if I decide to visit the website so I can browse around or make a comment, but that is a minor complaint in the scheme of things.
I only just found google reader a few days ago.
Awesome!
I like awesome too by the way. Its a West Coast thing few East Coasters really get. I choose to embrace my Valley Girl "Awesome" and my Southern Girl "Ya'll" all at once. "Ya'll are awesome!" And of course there is a special way to say both words.
I only like Google Reader because of a handy little function called the "Next" Button. It's a button you put on your toolbar, and when you click it, it takes you to the latest unread blog post (from your Google Reader)...on their blog! So much easier than saving all of your favorite blogs to your bookmarks, and you get to enjoy everyone's blog layouts!
(In your Google Reader, click on Settings, then on Reader settings, then on Goodies, then scroll down until you find the next button and follow the instructions.)
I love Google Reader, but I always hated that Reader stripped out all of the blog personality... until I found that you can add a "next" button to your toolbar. Now, I just click next and it takes me to the next blog post in my reader. Awesome! It makes me comment more and I can read through 10-20 at a time for short bursts and I'm not overwhelmed at seeing 350 unread items. Ahem. Ummmm not that I let it go that long or anything.
She explains it a ton better than I can:

Google is the only way to read your subscriptions!
It's totally how I read your blog!
Can't live without it, if I don't use it for a day, I get withdrawal symptoms!!
Oh my, I love Google Reader! It saves me so much time. And, I'll be honest, I still tend to waste too much time, b/c I check it a lot. Don't worry, I'm seeing a psychiatrist for this. :) I have the Google reader app on my i phone, which is even more lovely. I usually spend my mornings reading blogs from my phone in bed. Fantastic!! You are right though, a lot of people have no clue what it is.
I use igoogle home page. It's awesome. I can see what I have read already and what is new. And if there is a picture on the post it shows a small pic along with a short portion of the post.
I L-O-V-E Google Reader! In fact I read your post on my Google Reader just now. It is so much fun to log in and see all the updates...and so sad :( when there are none.
Hahaha. I just read your post in Google Reader. Had to jump over to comment and let you know that I LOVE Google Reader as well. I couldn't live without it!!!
I don't think I can live without Google Reader! I too hate it when there are no unread items.
Ok it only took me like a day to figure out that it's so much better... I got over the fact of seeing the "actual blog" real fast!
I don't know how people live without it. Seriously.
Only two things would make Google Reader better... if subscriptions would help my page rank and if I could comment directly from the reader. Ah, well. Maybe one day.
I too love google reader! I just switched from yahoo, what a difference. I have to agree with other comments that it does make it harder to leave comments on posts. I love comments and always want to leave them but then I get distracted with reading all the posts in my google reader that I forget to go back to the actual blog. But I did here!
i had happened upon it but hadn't really tried it, but maybe now I will. It seems easier that following the link list in my sidebar.
thanks for the tips!
Just found your blog through Lindalou, this post is so true! I know everyone's been saying "I don't know how people live without it" but I actually can't remember a time when I wasn't using Reader that's how much it's taken over my life! It's my first stop in the morning and last at night, I know for a fact I wouldn't follow as many blogs if it wasn't this easy to read them!
I organise my subscriptions into Academia, Comics, Cooking, Design & Photography, Fashion, Funny, News & Gossip, Blogs, Library and finally Etsy & Crafting. It's vital!
YEY for Reader :D
xxx
I love Google Reader and find it so much easier and better to use than the Blogger Dashboard. iGoogle is my homepage and I have the Google Reader widget on there, makes it even simpler to read blogs!
I had NO IDEA what it was... and I must admit - I've been *very* behind the times when it comes to readers of any kind. I've always just clicked as I had the time - GULP... looks like Google Reader just swallowed me up.
Ha! I NEVER see 'no unread items' in my Reader. I am like a moth to a flame when I see that 'subscribe' button on a good blog. In fact, I always have more than 1000 unread items in my Reader. Terrible, huh?
Actually, since implementing your great idea of using the 'Next' button I never have to see how many unread items I have, just experience the bloggy goodness. I feel less guilty about subscribing to too many blogs!
