The power of spray paint

I’m a member of a vintage yard sale group on Facebook and pretty much every post has me swooning over beautiful items.

Usually, I’m not fast enough to snatch up the things in my price range, but last week all the stars aligned and I was able to score this beautiful vintage tea cart. Similar carts sell for about $100 on ebay, so I was pretty excited to score this bad boy for just $25.

Unfortunately, once I had it in my possession I realized that the gold paint was in horrible condition. I toyed with the thought of just repainting it gold-But, thought I’d go a little outside my comfort zone and go yellow.

I am so glad I took the risk! I am loving this before and after shot.

Isn’t the yellow just so much more fun? I love the life that the piece brings into the room.

Plus, my chatbooks (instagram books) look all lined up on it.

Basically, I’m pretty much in awe at what spray paint can do to change a piece.

Have you ever spray painted something and felt like it made your piece a billion times better? Leave me a link in the comments. I’d love to see it!

Back to School Teacher Gift - Homemade Vanilla

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I love a good pun. I am basically the cheesy queen, and I’m always making ridiculous jokes. Some people find it endearing, other people roll their eyes. Hopefully you are part of the first camp, because, guys. I have the cheesiest back to school teacher gift ever.

Homemade vanilla with special sayings on them. One says “you’re EXTRACTly the teacher I wanted this year!” while the other reads “do me a FLAVOR and have a great school year”.

I wish you could have been there in bed with my husband and me when we came up with these. We were pretty certain one of us was going to laugh ourselves to death. It was just really really funny, and I am so happy I have someone just as punny as I am to share this crazy life with. But I digress.

Who wouldn’t love some homemade vanilla? It’s delicious and so easy to make (check out my how to on my other blog, Life Unfluffed).

Once you’ve made your vanilla, just pour it into some bottles (I bought these ones, but in hindsight I sort of wish I would have purchased clear ones!), print off the labels onto sticker paper, cut them out and stick them on! Easy as pie.

I also made a little label for the back side of the jars because I wanted there to be a place for names and also for the date that it was made. Homemade vanilla lasts indefinitely, but I think it’s a fun little thing to have on there. Be sure to tell your child’s teacher if the vanilla hasn’t aged long enough, though (usually about 6-10 weeks).

$5 painted IKEA doormat

I have been wanting to paint a rug ever since I saw Jen’s over at Tatertots and Jello. Only, I was a little hesitant to spend $50 dollars on a bigger rug because I was fairly certain that painted rugs were too good to be true.

But, people! I’m here to tell you that painting rugs really DOES work. I was concerned about the paint rubbing off onto our feet and getting tracked all over our house, but that hasn’t happened at all. Even after we had a huge rainstorm last night. That’s what I like to call a rug win, you guys.

Since I was too scared to commit to a giant painted rug, I started off with just a little ol’ doormat from IKEA (the sindal door mat, which is only $4.99)

I actually kind of liked the rug plain, but I was determined to paint. So, I taped off a simple little design, then grabbed some neon spray paint and went to town.

I was super nervous when I started peeling off the tape. I was sure that the spray paint would have bled through the paint. But, it totally didn’t and so I celebrated by doing a little happy dance, then leaving it outside to finish drying.

Once it was completely dried, I sprayed it with some scotch guard and waited a few more hours before bringing it inside.

I am in love with the neon. It helps bring my otherwise boring living room some life. I can’t help but smile every time I see it now. And, at only $5? Come on people. It’s a no brainer!

Who knows, maybe one day I’ll attempt a larger rug? Only time will tell!

The Secret to Breaking in New Shoes

Okay, so I just want to be clear. That was a bad title. The Secret to Breaking in New Shoes…Really, Erika? I’ve reached a new low in punniness. Sorry. I really just couldn’t help myself.

So, you know when you buy new shoes (usually the cheap kind) that hurt so much to wear? They rub in all the wrong places, but you endure the pain anyway because the shoes are just so cute? You’ve been there, right?

Well, I have the “secret” to help cure all your shoe woes. Really, this tip for breaking in new shoes is magical.

Just spray some Secret deodorant on your feet before you slip them into your shoes. Make sure to spray all over the sides of your feet and everywhere that your shoe rubs too much (don’t forget your heel!).
Not only will your feet slip right into your shoe, but it’ll almost feel like you’re wearing a sock!

In fact, I’ve been known to spray my feet before wearing my converse because I really just hate wearing socks in general. I love that my feet don’t get sweaty at all, and at the same time they are comfy as can be. It’s a game changer, people!

I know, I know. This post is weird, right?
But, I just thought I’d let you in on a fun little tip so I could hopefully save a few of you some blisters.

Let me know if you try it out! I would love to hear if it works for you or if you just think it’s plain old weird.
