Today, I went to my parents' house for dinner. The first thing my mom said when I arrived was "Erika, you HAVE to come see my basement... I just cleaned it all out!" I willingly obliged because I had a feeling she'd have lots of crap to give me. I was right.
I also found a box full of clear jars. Immediately, when I saw them, I remembered a little trick that was going around blogland to make clear bottles have color. I knew that I needed to make a few changes, though.
One of those changes was to paint the inside of the bottles, rather than the outside for a more polished look. I also decided to use a mixture of Mod Podge and Tacky Glue for maximum coverage and a smooth finish.
I wish I could give you an exact recipe, but I honestly just eyed it. If I were you, I would use one part Mod Podge/Tacky Glue mixture to a 1/4 part water. Then, add as much or as little food coloring as you need to to get the color you prefer.
Once the mixture was made, I decided that the easiest way to get the bottles dyed evenly would be to pour some of the mixture into the bottles and secure the lid. Once I did that, it was easy to shake the bottle around and make sure the each and every little centimeter of the bottle was covered. Then, I set them out to dry.
Here's the finished product. They're still a little streaky, but I just couldn't wait to post about them so I didn't wait for them to fully dry.
Sorry for the billion pictures. I absolutely loved this project. It was so much fun to make and probably the easiest project I've ever done. Need proof? My craft challenged sister even helped out!
(Don't you LOVE those vibrant colors while they're drying?)

They are nice and must have been so fun to dye. My favorite is the tall greenish-blue.
Love that technique and also dying to try it! They look awesome!
Must do this! LOVE it.
Those are awesome! I've got some soda bottles I plan to do something like this with!
Oops! I guess it did!
That was such a fun project. Everyone in the family got involved. My favorite was my tiny green bottle that didn't make it to any of the pictures. :(
Thanks for the fun day.
Momma
That is such a fun idea! What do you think you'll use them for? Displays? Flowers? A place to put your small crafting bits and bobs? They are so pretty!

I love these! I have a weird shaped wine bottle awaiting this treatment! The only tutorial I've seen used thinned out oil based paints to colour the insides. Haven't seen Many painted on the outside. Would they not chip? I can't wait to see what u do with the jars! I'm obsessed with fresh flowers at the minute and I love pretty vases!
I've seen the project a few times, but you have definitively the best pictures going on. Immensely pretty!

What a great idea! I have to tell my mom about this since she practically collects clear glass.

This is the best project I've seen a while! What a fun idea!
Love the tall blue vase!!
LOVE these jars! I want them!
simply put: LOVE!
I've seen this same idea on another blog, but your combo and drying upside down really made it work better.
I'm going to start collecting glass stuff and see what I can do. I just love the blue.
This is a great idea! I love it!
Amazing!!
Those are beautiful! And it sounds pretty easy. I'm going to have to try this :)
Oh I adore this project. It is going in my style file for sure!
Happy 4th of July!
Those are beautiful! Now I need to find some glass jars to try this on!
What a great trick. I didn't know you could do this. I love the turquoise one, so bright!
